How We Research
Every guide on Best Jump Starters Reviews starts with one question: will this jump starter work for the person who is shopping for it? For us, that means your engine, your climate and how much extra you want in the box.
Here is how we answer it.
1. We start with your engine
A four-cylinder sedan, a V8 pickup and a diesel truck each call for a different size of jump starter. A pack that suits a small car can be too small for a big engine.
We check the engine size the maker says each model is rated for, and we say what to look for when your engine limits the choice.
2. We compare specs and features
We look at the rated engine size, the battery type, the battery capacity and the weight. We also check the clamps, the cable length and what comes in the box.
Peak amp numbers are mostly marketing, so we lean on the engine size the maker rates instead. We also note extras like an air compressor, a power bank port, a flashlight and a cold-weather rating.
NOCO, Gooloo, DeWalt and WOLFBOX describe their products in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.
3. We look at buyer feedback
We read through what buyers report after using a jump starter. We look for patterns, like packs that lose charge, clamps that feel flimsy, units that struggle in the cold and cases that don't fit.
One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.
4. We score each product
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A product that's great for one reader may score lower in a guide written for another.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We keep pages up to date
Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers sell close models under similar names, so we check each model number and what comes in the box, and we only link new units.
We skip unknown brands with no track record and any product with a safety warning or a recall, so we check the model against the Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall list before we link it. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every product we cover.
A jump starter can't promise to start every car, so we quote the maker's engine rating and name the maker. Lithium and lead-acid packs can cause burns or fires if they're damaged or used the wrong way.
Follow the maker's manual for your model and your car's manual for the right connection points. Stop using any pack that is swollen, hot or leaking.
